Lesson 9 of 9

Finish and share

Export your book for readers and agents, and keep your library safe on every device.

You've built a world and drafted a book. In this last lesson you'll compile it into a file for agents, editors and readers, and make sure your library is safe, backed up and in sync across your devices.

What you'll do

  • Export a manuscript as Word, EPUB, PDF or markdown.
  • Back up your whole library, and know how to restore it.
  • Keep your library in sync with Dropbox or Google Drive.

1. Compile your book

Open the manuscript and tap the share button (Compile and export) at the top.

The Compile sheet: format, which scene statuses and chapters to include, and Export Word
  1. Choose a Format:

    Format Best for
Word Agents and editors: standard manuscript format, double-spaced, with your name and page numbers.
EPUB Reading on Apple Books, Kobo and other e-readers.
PDF A 6×9″ book layout to read on screen or print.
    Markdown Any other app.
  2. Choose what's included. Scenes are picked by status: planning-only Outline scenes are left out at first. Untick any Chapters you're unsure of.

  3. Choose how it looks: Scene breaks (#, * * * or a blank line) and Chapter headings, such as "Chapter One" followed by the title.

  4. Add front matter if you like: a Title page with your name and contact details, a Dedication and an Epigraph.

  5. Tap Export.

Compiling gives a clean manuscript: mentions become plain names, and comments, synopses and other planning notes are left out. In markdown, with a title page and * * * scene breaks, the start of the book comes out like this:

# The Ember Crown

by A. Writer

## Chapter One: The Salt Road

The ash came down soft as moth wings the morning Kaela left Emberfall.

---

He was sitting on a milestone as if he had been waiting for her…

2. Back up your library

Your library lives on your device, so keep a copy somewhere else. Open Settings → Backup and tap Export library: you get one .zip of every world, book and lore entry, as markdown.

Settings → Backup: Export library and Restore from backup

Save it to iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Dropbox, or send it to yourself. To bring a library back, or to move to a new device, use Restore from backup there.

3. Sync across your devices

To skip the manual backups, open Settings → Sync and turn on Dropbox or Google Drive (or both). Mythforge keeps a copy of your library in its own folder there, uploads edits as you write, and brings in changes from your other devices the next time you open it.

On a computer with Chrome or Edge, you can instead keep the library in a folder you choose, such as one inside iCloud Drive or OneDrive: Settings → Storage → Folder on this computer.

4. Make Mythforge yours

A few settings worth a look now that you know your way around:

  • Theme: Auto, Light or Dark.
  • Daily goal: words a day, to keep a habit going.
  • Manuscript toolbar and Lorebook toolbar: choose and pin your tools.
  • Focus: typewriter scrolling, and dimming every paragraph but the one you're writing.
Settings: appearance, writing and focus
