Comments

Leave notes on passages of a scene, then resolve them as you revise.

Comments are notes to yourself on a passage of a scene: "check the timeline here", "too slow", "foreshadow the crown". They highlight the text they're about, collect in one list per manuscript, and never end up in the book you export.

Add a comment

  1. In a scene, select the passage you want to comment on.
  2. Choose Comment on the editor toolbar.
  3. Write your note and choose Add.

The passage is now highlighted. With nothing selected, Comment uses the word the cursor is in.

Read, resolve and delete

Select a highlighted passage, or put the cursor in it and choose Comment, to open its comment. On a phone it opens as a sheet; on a wider window it appears beside the passage.

A comment open over its highlighted passage
  • Edit the note: changes are kept as you type. Close when you're finished.
  • Resolve marks it dealt with. The highlight goes, but the comment is kept, so you can Reopen it later.
  • Delete removes the note. The text it was on stays as it is.

See all your comments

  • For a manuscript: once it has comments, a Comments row appears under its synopsis, showing how many are open.
  • For a scene: choose … (Scene details) → Comments. On a wide window, it's in the details panel beside the editor.

Both lists are in reading order, with Open and Resolved comments in separate views. Select an open comment to jump to its scene with the passage highlighted.

On a wide window the list docks in the panel beside the editor, in place of the scene's details, so you can work through your notes while the text stays in view. Close it with the × at the top of the panel. On a phone, or a window too narrow for the panel, it opens as a sheet instead.

If you delete the text a comment was on, the comment stays in the list as "Its text has been deleted", so the note isn't lost. Open it to read it, resolve it or delete it.

Good to know

  • A comment belongs to its passage, not to a position, so it stays put while you edit around it, on any device.
  • Comments don't count towards word counts, aren't searched, and are left out of everything you compile.
  • Passages can't overlap: choosing Comment inside an existing passage opens that comment.
  • Cutting a passage and pasting it elsewhere moves the text but not its comment.
