Search, find and replace

Find anything in a world, and change a word or name everywhere it appears.

Search finds anything in the world you're in: a manuscript, chapter, scene or lore entry by name, or any words in your prose and notes. Open its Replace field and the same screen becomes find and replace, so you can change a name everywhere it appears.

  • On a phone, choose Search in the bar at the bottom of a world.
  • On a wider window, choose Search in the sidebar's rail, or press ⌘ ⇧ F on a Mac or iPad, or Ctrl Shift F on Windows and Linux. The search field and its results fill the sidebar, and each result you open appears in the editor while the results stay put, so you can work down the list. Choosing another section in the rail brings that section's list back.
  • With a keyboard, press ⌘ P on a Mac or iPad, or Ctrl P on Windows and Linux, for the quick switcher: the same search in a window over the screen, closed as soon as you open a result.

Search only looks inside the world you're in. Before you type, it lists the documents you opened recently, so it doubles as a quick way back to them.

What you'll find

Results come in groups:

Group What's in it
Go to Manuscripts, chapters, scenes and lore entries whose name matches, including "also known as" names.
In text Scenes and lore notes that contain your words, with the matching passage highlighted.
Tags Shown when you start with #, such as #villain: each matching tag and how many pages and scenes have it.
Search results for "ember": names under Go to, passages under In text

Use the arrow keys and Enter, or select a result. A text result opens the scene or entry and scrolls straight to that passage.

Match case and Whole word

Two buttons sit inside the search field:

  • Aa (Match case) finds only text with the same capital letters, so "Rook" skips "rook".
  • ab (Whole word) finds whole words only, so "Ember" skips "Emberfall". "Kaela's" still counts as "Kaela".

Mythforge remembers them on this device. If a search finds nothing while one is on, it says so.

Find and replace

  1. Open search and choose the › chevron at the left of the search field. A Replace field appears below it.
  2. Type what to find, then what to put in its place.
  3. Choose where to replace: This scene, Manuscript or World. You're offered the scene or manuscript you have open.
  4. Check the list. Every match is shown in its scene, with the old text struck through and the new text beside it. Untick any you want to leave alone, or use Select all / Select none.
  5. Choose Replace (it shows how many, such as Replace 12).
Find and replace, showing each match with its replacement

Nothing changes until you choose Replace, and you can select any match first to see it in its scene. When you come back to search, your replace is still there.

There are two more ways to open find and replace with the Replace field already showing:

  • In a scene, choose … (Scene details) → Find and replace. It starts on This scene.
  • Press ⌘ ⌥ F (Mac and iPad) or Ctrl Alt F (Linux; Ctrl Alt Shift F on Windows).

Undo a replace

Straight after replacing, choose Undo to put every scene back.

Later on you can still undo it scene by scene: before replacing, Mythforge saves each scene's text as a snapshot. Open the scene's Snapshots and restore the version from before the replace.

Replaced words don't count towards today's daily goal.
