Planning and the corkboard

Give scenes a synopsis, point of view and location, and lay them out as index cards.

Before a scene has any prose, it can still say what happens, whose eyes we see it through and where it's set. Fill those in and your manuscript becomes a plan: lay the scenes out as index cards on the corkboard, see who is in what in the planner, filter them by point of view, and move them around until the story works.

Plan a scene

Open a scene and choose … (Scene details). On a wide window the same fields are in the details panel beside the editor.

Field What it's for
Synopsis What happens, in a line. Shown under the scene's title in lists and on its card.
Point of view The character whose eyes we see it through. Pick any lore entry; characters are listed first.
Location Where it happens. Places are listed first.
When The in-world date, which puts the scene on the timeline.

Point of view and location come from your lorebook, so search it by name and select the entry. Use the × to clear either one.

The corkboard

In a manuscript, switch Show scenes as from List to Cards. Each scene becomes an index card, grouped by chapter, showing:

  • the title and synopsis,
  • its status (the coloured dot) and word count,
  • the point-of-view character's picture or icon,
  • its in-world date, if it has one.
The corkboard: index cards grouped by chapter

Select a card to open the scene, or + Scene to add one to a chapter. Mythforge remembers List or Cards on each device.

Rearrange cards

  • With a mouse or trackpad: drag a card to its new place, in the same chapter or another one.
  • With a keyboard: focus a card and press Alt ↑ or Alt ↓ (⌥ on a Mac).
  • On a touch screen: tap Reorder above the chapters and use the arrows (see Writing a manuscript).

The planner

For a bird's-eye view of the whole book, switch Show scenes as to Plan. It has two layouts:

  • Characters: chapters run across the top, with their act and synopsis, and characters run down the side. Each scene appears in the row of every character it involves, either as the point of view (marked ★) or because they're mentioned in it. Read across a row to follow one character's thread through the book. Scenes with no characters share a last row.
  • Chapters: a column for each chapter, with its synopsis at the top and its scenes below, each showing its synopsis, point of view, place and date.
The planner's Characters layout: chapters across, characters down
Each character's thread through the book, chapter by chapter.
The planner's Chapters layout: a column per chapter

On a phone, scroll the planner sideways to see more chapters. Select a scene to open it. Characters are the lore entries in your Character category (or any category with a person icon). Mythforge remembers the layout on each device.

Filter by point of view or status

Above the scenes, filters narrow the list, the cards and the planner:

  • All POVs lets you choose one character, or No POV for scenes without one. It's a quick way to read one character's thread through the book.
  • All statuses lets you choose Outline, Draft, Revised or Final, such as every scene still in draft.
  • All threads appears once the manuscript has plot threads, and shows the scenes that advance one of them.

If nothing matches, choose Show all scenes. The filters reset when you open another manuscript.

Flashbacks and slips

When scenes have dates under When, Mythforge notices a scene set earlier than the dated scene before it, and marks it with a small ↶ icon in the list, on its card and in Scene details ("a flashback?"). If it's meant to be a flashback, ignore it. If not, you've caught a continuity slip. See The timeline.
