Keyboard shortcuts
Switch tabs and show or hide panels from the keyboard, on a computer or an iPad.
With a keyboard, on a computer or an iPad, you can move between tabs and groups, and show or hide the sidebar and scene details, without reaching for the mouse or the screen.
To see the full list inside Mythforge, press ⌘ / on a Mac or iPad, or Ctrl / on Windows and Linux.
Why Option and Shift
Most shortcuts use ⌥ Option ⇧ Shift on a Mac or iPad, and Alt Shift on Linux. Browsers keep shortcuts like Ctrl Tab and ⌘ W for their own tabs, so Mythforge uses keys they leave free. That way the same shortcuts work in Safari, Chrome, Edge, the installed app and the iPad app. The desktop app takes the usual tab keys as well: Ctrl Tab and Ctrl Shift Tab move between tabs, Ctrl Shift T reopens one, and on Windows Ctrl W closes one.
On Windows, Alt Shift switches the keyboard layout, so there Mythforge uses Ctrl Alt instead (Ctrl Alt → for the next tab), and the shortcuts that are Ctrl Alt on Linux add Shift (Ctrl Alt Shift F for find and replace). If you have only one keyboard layout, the Alt Shift shortcuts still work too. The tables below show the Linux keys; the list inside Mythforge always shows your computer's.
They work while you're typing in the editor, too. They pause while a sheet or dialog is open.
Tabs and groups
Every screen you open in a world on a wide window becomes a tab, in a group of tabs; a phone has the same tabs for your scenes and lore entries behind the Tabs button. See Tabs, groups and split view.
| Mac and iPad | Windows and Linux | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| ⌥ ⇧ → | Alt Shift → | Next tab |
| ⌥ ⇧ ← | Alt Shift ← | Previous tab |
| ⌥ ⇧ 1 … 8 | Alt Shift 1 … 8 | Go to that tab |
| ⌥ ⇧ 9 | Alt Shift 9 | Go to the last tab |
| ⌥ ⇧ W | Alt Shift W | Close the tab you're on |
| ⌥ ⇧ T | Alt Shift T | Reopen the tab you closed last |
| ⌥ ⇧ K | Alt Shift K | Keep a preview tab open, so the next thing you open doesn't replace it |
| ⌘ ⌥ ← | Ctrl Alt ← | Go back in this group |
| ⌘ ⌥ → | Ctrl Alt → | Go forward in this group |
| ⌥ ⇧ \ | Alt Shift \ | Split right: open the current tab in a new group beside it |
| ⌥ ⇧ M | Alt Shift M | Maximize the group you're in, or show all groups again |
| ⌘ ⌥ 1 … 3 | Ctrl Alt 1 … 3 | Focus the first, second or third group |
Next and previous wrap around, so going past the last tab brings you back to the first. They move through the tabs of the group you're in.
Groups need a wide window; on a phone only the tab shortcuts apply. The group menu (Group options, the ··· button) lists the same commands with their keys.
Sidebar, scene and focus
These show and hide the parts of the workbench around your writing, like the buttons that do the same thing.
| Mac and iPad | Windows and Linux | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| ⌥ ⇧ S | Alt Shift S | Show or hide the sidebar |
| ⌥ ⇧ I | Alt Shift I | Show or hide the scene's details beside it |
| ⌥ ⇧ F | Alt Shift F | Focus mode: hide everything but the scene (more) |
| ⌥ ⇧ H | Alt Shift H | Underline prose feedback in the scene (more) |
| ⌥ ⇧ ↑ | Alt Shift ↑ | Go to the previous scene |
| ⌥ ⇧ ↓ | Alt Shift ↓ | Go to the next scene |
| ⌥ ⇧ N | Alt Shift N | Add a new scene after this one |
| ⌥ ⇧ C | Alt Shift C | Add a new chapter to the manuscript you're in |
| ⌥ ⇧ L | Alt Shift L | Add a new lore entry |
Mythforge remembers whether the sidebar is open or a slim rail of icons, on each device.
