The free trial and unlocking Mythforge

What the trial banner means, what read-only mode keeps working, and how unlocking works.

Mythforge is software you buy once and keep: no subscription and no ads. It starts with a free, full-featured trial. This guide explains what the trial banner tells you, what happens when a trial pauses or ends, and where to unlock Mythforge.

Your writing is always yours

Whatever state Mythforge is in, you can:

  • read everything you've written,
  • export it (Backups),
  • sync what already exists with Dropbox or Google Drive (Sync).

Only changing and creating things can pause. Your files are plain markdown on your own device either way.

The free trial

A new install is fully unlocked for 30 days of use: every feature, sync and export, with no caps. It counts days you actually use Mythforge, so a fortnight away doesn't cost you days.

The trial banner appears at the top of the Library and each world's home, never over the editor:

The trial banner, three days from the end
Near the end, the banner counts down and offers Unlock.
  • While there's plenty of time left, it's a quiet line: " days left in your trial".
  • In the last five days it's more prominent, and says "Unlock Mythforge to keep writing. Your work stays yours either way."
  • On the last day it reads "Last day of your trial".

The trial checks in with Mythforge now and then while you're online. If it can't for a good while, it pauses, as below.

Settings → Purchase shows where this copy stands too, for example "Trial: 3 days left".

Settings → Purchase during a trial
Where this copy stands, Unlock Mythforge and Restore purchases.

When a trial pauses or ends

The states a trial moves through
The states a trial moves through
  • Paused: "Your trial is paused. Connect to the internet to carry on editing. Reading and exporting still work." Connect and the trial carries on where it was.
  • Ended: "Your trial has ended. Everything you wrote is still here to read and export. Unlock Mythforge to keep writing."
The banner once a trial has ended
Reading and exporting still work.

In both, Mythforge is read-only. You can open and read every scene and lore entry, search, browse the timeline, and export or restore backups. Sync keeps working, so changes from your other devices still arrive. What stops is editing and creating: the editor stops taking input, and New… buttons, and anything else that would change your library, open the Unlock sheet instead.

Unlocking Mythforge

Choose Unlock on the banner, or go to Settings → Purchase → Unlock Mythforge. The sheet lists what's included:

  • every manuscript, chapter and scene, with no limits,
  • the lorebook, timeline, plot threads and stats,
  • sync with Dropbox and Google Drive,
  • every future update to the core app.
The Unlock Mythforge sheet
One purchase, yours to keep.

It's one purchase, yours to keep. While purchases are closed the button reads Purchases open at launch.

  • Restore purchases (on the sheet and in Settings → Purchase) checks again for what you've bought, for example after reinstalling or moving to a new device.
  • Need more time? opens the support form, where you can ask for one extra 30 days. A person reads it; it isn't automatic. Settings → Purchase shows your Trial id at the bottom, which support may ask for.

What isn't decided yet

The price, which stores and platforms purchases launch on, and whether beta testers get anything for helping aren't settled, so this guide doesn't say. It will once they are.
