The editor

Formatting, the toolbar, mentioning lore while you write, and daily goals.

The editor is where you write scenes and lore notes. It's deliberately quiet: your text, a title and a toolbar that sits just above the keyboard.

Writing and saving

Type and Mythforge saves as you go. There's no save button and nothing to lose if you close the app or switch scenes.

A scene in the editor

Your writing is stored as markdown, a simple plain-text format, so it stays readable outside Mythforge too (see Where your writing lives).

Bold, italics and the rest are written as ordinary markdown. A line with dialogue, a bold word and an italic word is stored as:

"We walk at dawn," she said. **No one** follows the Choir's road _twice_.

The toolbar

The toolbar gives you formatting like bold, italics and headings. On a phone it rides on top of the on-screen keyboard.

  • Tools that don't fit are under More tools (…).
  • Pinned tools stay visible at the end of the toolbar while the rest scroll.

Scenes start with bold, italics, Mention lore (@), dialogue quotes, an em dash and Comment, with undo and redo pinned. Lore notes add headings, lists and more, plus a Picture tool under … for adding images (see Lore details and pictures).

Make it your own

Scenes and lore notes each have their own toolbar. To change one, open Settings → Writing and choose Manuscript toolbar or Lorebook toolbar. From there you can:

  • add a tool to the toolbar, or move it into the … menu,
  • pin a tool,
  • drag tools into the order you like.

Mention lore while you write

Type @ followed by a few letters of a name to mention a character, place or anything else from your lorebook. Pick it from the suggestions and Mythforge links the mention to that entry.

Typing @Ore, with Brother Oren suggested above the keyboard

Comments

Select a passage and choose Comment on the toolbar to leave yourself a note about it, such as "check this against chapter 2". The passage is highlighted until you resolve the comment. See Comments.

Earlier versions

Mythforge keeps snapshots of each scene as you work, at most one an hour, and you can take your own before a big rewrite. Find them in a scene's details (…) → Snapshots. See Snapshots.

Focus mode and typewriter scrolling

When you want nothing on screen but your words, turn on Focus mode from a scene's … button, or the corners button on a wider window. Settings → Focus adds typewriter scrolling, which keeps your line at the same height, and dims every paragraph but the one you're writing. See Focus and typewriter modes.

Colours and theme

Open Settings → Appearance to choose light or dark (or Auto to follow your device) and a set of colours, from the quiet Mythforge, Parchment, Fjord, Ember and Dusk to the loud Synthwave, Vaporwave, Terminal, Amber, Arcade, Abyss and Gothic. Each comes in a light and a dark version, and the choice is kept on each device. See Themes and colour palettes, which also covers Settings → Typography.

Daily goals

Set a Daily goal (words a day) in Settings → Writing. Your progress for today then shows in a scene's details (…), and resets each day. For your history, streaks and more, see Writing stats.

Writing sprints

To write against the clock, start a Writing sprint from the stopwatch button at the top of a scene (on a phone, from the scene's … button), or with ⌥ ⇧ R (Alt Shift R). Pick 10, 15, 25 or 45 minutes (or your own), and a word goal if you like. A small timer counts down and counts your words, and a summary shows your words and pace at the end. See Writing sprints.

Moving between documents

You can have several scenes and notes open at once, as tabs, and on a wide window put two side by side (see Tabs, panels and split view). Inside a world, search (⌘ P or Ctrl P) jumps straight to any scene or lore entry by name, and finds words anywhere in your writing (see Search, find and replace). For moving between tabs and more, see Keyboard shortcuts.
