Lore details and pictures

Add portraits and maps, keep facts in fields, and set the fields each category starts with.

A lore entry is more than a name and a few notes. Give it a picture, such as a portrait, an emblem or a map, and keep its facts in Details: a character's age and goal, a city's population, who leads a faction. Each category has its own set of fields, and you can change them to suit your world.

Add a picture

  1. Open the lore entry and choose Add a picture. On a phone you can also take a photo.
  2. Pick an image.

The picture appears at the top of the entry's page. It also replaces the category icon wherever the entry appears: in the lorebook, in search, in mentions and on corkboard cards for a point-of-view character.

Use Replace picture to change it, or Remove to go back to the category icon.

A coat of arms

Instead of a photo, an entry can have a coat of arms or a flag, handy for a faction, a house or a kingdom. Choose Coat of arms (it sits beside Add a picture).

  1. Choose Roll the dice for a random design, as many times as you like, or build one yourself.
  2. Choose a Shape (shield, round, banner, flag and more), the Field colour, a Division with a second colour, an Ordinary such as a cross or chevron, and a Charge such as a star, a tower or a flame, with its colour and how many.
  3. Choose Use. The arms become the entry's picture, so they appear everywhere the picture does.

Mythforge nudges you toward the old heraldic rule of not putting metal on metal or colour on colour, but it's your world: it only warns.

The design is kept with the entry, so Edit arms reopens it exactly as you left it. If you replace the picture with a photo, the arms are no longer the picture and the button goes back to Coat of arms.

Pictures in notes

To put a picture in an entry's notes, such as a map under a place's history, use the Picture tool on the notes toolbar. It's under … (More tools) at first. You can move it onto the toolbar in Settings → Writing → Lorebook toolbar (see The editor).

Pictures are part of your library: they're stored as image files beside your markdown, and included in backups and sync.

Details

The Details section on an entry's page holds short facts, one per line. Select a value to type in it. It saves when you press Enter or leave the field.

A character's page with its details

New entries start with their category's fields, empty, with a hint about what goes in each. The categories you start with have these:

Category Fields
Character Age, Role, Appearance, Goal
Species Appearance, Habitat, Lifespan, Nature
Place Region, Population, Climate, Known for
Faction Leader, Seat, Goal, Allies
Event Where, Who, Outcome
Artifact Origin, Owner, Powers
Page none

Need something else for one entry? Choose Add field. Fields you add yourself have a × to remove them. The category's own fields stay, even when they're empty.

Changing an entry's category never loses what you've filled in. Empty fields from the old category go, and the new category's fields are added.

Change a category's fields

  1. In the Lorebook, choose Categories (the sliders button), then the category.
  2. Under Fields, you can:
    • Add field, with a name and an optional hint,
    • rename a field or change its hint,
    • move fields up and down to set their order,
    • remove a field with ×.
  3. Choose Save.

New entries in that category start with the new fields. Existing entries keep their values: if you rename or remove a field, entries that had it filled in keep it as a field of their own.
